Today in class I have created five samples all A3 sized unless I fabric manipulate once printed then I shall use a A2 peice of fabric because the fabric will shrink when manipulated I used the screen printing method, these are the prints I will be presenting to Moo Designs to help them choose their favourite design and choose a winner of the competition.
(1) I started off by using a A3 peice of silk and printed onto it using Black SNG pigment, to create this colour I filled of pot full of binder then kept adding pigment dye to the binder until I got the correct shade I wanted I did this process for both my black and grey colouring, I did the same to get the colour of the starfish and shells using Turqoise 4G. I firstly printed my shell and starfish design then once that was dry I could print my monochrome tartan design, to do this I firstly layed my screen on top of my design that would print my grey colour, then once this was dry I could then do the next screen that would print black lines and block colour, I had several problems with this as I didn't securely tape my fabric down to the table therefore when I printed my fabric moved slightly which made my design difficult to line up when applying the next screens the other problem was the fact of when silk get wet it shrinks and bunches up this then lead to problems when lining screens up, although I do really love the colours I have used in this design if the silk hadn't bunched and shrunk this would have been a really effective design.
2) For my second design I printed using pigment dye and puff binder onto cotton once again I mixed my colour using binder and pigment dyes, Minerprint Orange G and Red BTL and then used Black SNG for the puff binder of both black and grey colouring, I also really really liked this design as I thought the colours looked warm and complimented each other well especially as the designs are for a S/S collection, the only problems I had when printing this design was not washing my screen quick enough which could have resulted in the screen blocking which would have caused me problems later on when printing the other problem was when I was puffing up my puff binder using the heat gun I had the gun on too hot and was holding it too close to my fabric which then burnt my fabric in several places which I wasn't too pleased about but this will make me more aware when I use this process again.
3) The next process I used was Devore printing onto Azeta, screen printing and dying fabric, this was one of the most drawn out process and got quite tedious at times, firstly I printed my shells and starfish using Devore paste which burns away the fibre in the fabric once this was done I had to leave to dry naturally then heat press it for 20 seconds at 180 degrees then wash it again, then I deceided to dye up my fabric using half a cup of water mixed with 5ml of Turqoise which made my fabric a very light colour I then added another 15ml of Turqoise to the mix and dip dyed the bottom of the fabric and faded the colours into each other, then I had to dry the dyed fabric heat press it again, wash it again, dry it then finally print pigment dyes onto it using screen print, I decided only to use one colour on this mixing binder with black SNG pigment to create a very light grey colour, I LOVED this design as it was simplistic looking but very effective I also found it looked very delicate and elegant.
4) For my 4th sample design I had previously fabric manipulated my fabric and then decided to print on top of the already manipulated fabric, I used Minerprint Orange G mixed with Red BTL, then Black SNG, to get the light orange colour I mixed both the orange and red together and kept adding red to create the darker orange to the design, I feel this design looks beautiful especially with these two very warm colours together! This is one of the designs that I had no problems with at all!
5) Finally my 5th design I have created I printed onto muslin using Black SNG, Red BTL and Orange G mixed, I decided to print my starfish and shells in black and grey and the tartan in contrasting colours just to find out and experiment how my design would look when flipped the other way round, I feel it looks effective and both the tartan and my starfish and shell design both stand out nicely how ever the tartan design is a little too vivid if I was to produce this again I think I shall tone down the colours by adding more white binder.
